Pakistan New Supreme Court 29th Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa Sworn By President Arif Alvi

Pakistan New Chief Justice: Qazi Faiz Isa took oath as the 29th Chief Justice of Pakistan on Sunday (17 September). The tenure of Qazi Faiz Isa as the new Chief Justice of Pakistan will be for 13 months, which will end on 25 October 2024. Chief Justice Isa, 63, was sworn in by President Arif Alvi at a ceremony held at Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad in the presence of Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar, Army Chief General Asim Munir, ministers and other senior officials.

Justice Isa was born on 26 October 1959 in Quetta. His father Qazi Muhammad Isa was a prominent member of the movement for the establishment of Pakistan. He was considered a close associate of Mohammad Ali Jinnah. He did his primary education in Quetta. Completed A and O level education at Karachi Grammar School. After this he studied law in London, where he completed Bar Professional Law.

Accusations against Chief Justice’s wife
When the notification of appointment of Qazi Faiz Isa was read out in the oath ceremony program of the new Chief Justice of Pakistan, his wife Sarina Isa was also present along with Justice Isa. Usually, during such swearing-in ceremonies, close family members including husband and wife are made to sit in the front row.

Qazi Faiz Isa’s wife Sarina came into limelight when she faced investigation by tax authorities in a case filed in 2019. At that time, he was shown walking with the help of a stick on TV channels. Tax officials had accused her that her husband had bought property in London, which she owned. However, after some time Qazi Faiz Isa and his wife were acquitted after criticism from the legal fraternity.

Challenge of new Chief Justice of Pakistan
Pakistan’s new Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa is considered to be independent-minded. One of his decisions in 2019 had targeted the powerful establishment on the dharna of a religious party in Faizabad, after which there was a stir in the entire city. After this she was in trouble. A corruption case was filed against him, but it was later dismissed by the Supreme Court.

The appointment of Qazi Faiz Isa has come at a time when Pakistan is facing serious constitutional, legal and political challenges. The main challenge before him will be to hold general elections within 90 days of the dissolution of Parliament on August 9.

Facing more than 56,000 pending cases
The biggest task for the new Chief Justice of Pakistan may be to restore the prestige and neutrality of the top court, at a time when his predecessor Omar Ata Bandial, a former prime minister, Imran Khan There is an allegation of having a soft attitude towards. Apart from this, Justice Isa may have to look after more than 56,000 pending cases in the Supreme Court. Some of those cases were filed years ago and have not yet been heard.

Career of Qazi Faiz Isa
Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa started his career as a lawyer in the Balochistan High Court in 1985. After that, he became a Supreme Court lawyer in 1998. Qazi Faiz Isa became the judge of Balochistan High Court in the year 2009. He served as the Chief Justice of Balochistan High Court from 2009 to 2014.

After this, in the year 2014, he was made a judge of the Supreme Court. Justice Isa has recently been in the news for his protest against the non-implementation of the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Act enacted during the Shahbaz Sharif era. In protest, he has avoided hearing any cases for the last five months and instead chose to work in his chamber.
